Lack of money, poor mental health, age and infirmity can all undermine a person’s ability to cook for themselves. FoodCycle consists of an army of volunteers who prep and deliver meals to 1,400 of Britain’s most vulnerable people each week. These meals are about much more than just nutrition, giving crucial social nourishment too: helping those facing real hardship to feel whole and human again through company and conversation.
FoodCycle approached me to make four short films to give an insight into the charity’s social purpose. The films showed four key challenges which characterise their “guests”’ lives—hunger, loneliness, poor nutrition and mental health—and the power making them feel connected and valued has on their capability to move forwards with their lives.
